Let’s start by saying, I’m a big fan of layering. Layers can really take an outfit to another level. Now granted, there are some who prefer it, and some who could do completely without it. While layering isn’t for all, it certainly helps in creating a more intriguing look.
You first want to start off with the basics: bottoms and your “core” top piece. For example, in my outfit here, I paired a longer tunic by BCBG Max Azria to show as an added layer beneath the shorter Katherine Barclay sweater. The olive colored tunic pairs really well with the gray and black sweater, creating a more interesting look than just wearing the sweater and leggings. And to take it one more step, I added on a third layer with this Katherine Barclay cape (PS I love the black leather trimming, it completes everything).
Always look at your outfit and see how another layer can be added in, but always keep in mind your color scheme. This goes back to learning complementary colors, see post titled “How to Color Block” to learn more about complementary colors, because lets face it, some colors just do not work well together. TIP: A great layering item to hold over from your summer wardrobe is longer length, tunic style sleeveless tops to wear under sweaters in the winter. This is a great combination when pairing a sweater under a suit jacket, because the sleeveless top makes it less restrictive (and you now have three layers to your look!).
Hope you are able to get some ideas from this! Until next time, always be kind.
