If you are a friend of mine or a follower of Delightfully Deligne then you know there is one designer that always resonates with me, her name is Yuna Yang. Every year I look forward to seeing her runway shows because of her strong ability to tell a story through looks that build onto the next. There is never any confusion when a new look steps out onto the runway. Her shows are cohesive and flow effortlessly.
Every Yuna Yang show is an immersive experience.
You won’t be going to a studio or an unimposing, nondescript building– oh no, never. In the past, there have been shows in a hotel garden museum, inside a stately home, and most recently: a church. The perpetual change of venue keeps the anticipation almost electric for every show that I get the pleasure of attending.
This year was no exception to her exquisite taste. The SS19 Collection was all about freedom: freedom from expectations, stereotypes, and societal norms. The collection radiates an undercurrent of sensuality that frees you to be who you want to be, to love who you love, and to love what you wear. (An excellent sequel to her FW18 Collection which was all about loving yourself first.)
Yuna has been to many continents and her globe-trotting experience certainly shows in her most recent SS19 Collection. There is a wearable glamour to every piece that was shown: from the metallic ruffle skirt to the romantic lace trench; bold patterns like the bird-of-paradise print, which conjures a feeling of flying (the ultimate freedom) paired with light airy materials that make you feel as though you are wearing next to nothing.
In juxtaposition to those pieces, there were impeccably tailored pieces like the sexy white shirt, and the classic shirt dress. Yuna Yang always keeps it innovative, fresh, worldly, glamorous, and modern. But most importantly, she stands for unity and love.
“As a female Asian designer, I constantly face the challenge of breaking the stereotype of ‘an Asian woman.’ I imagine a world where people are free to achieve their dreams by facing challenges with passion and ceaseless efforts regardless of their background, race, gender or any other perceived boundaries dividing us,” said Yuna Yang.
Her spirit is one-of-a-kind in the fashion industry. I like to call her my “fashion angel” because when you see her in person her face just exudes kindness. February can’t come soon enough, for I literally cannot wait to see her next show.
Until next time, always be kind.
